Black History Book Club

Join GoBYK as we explore the Black history references and environments within novels by African American authors.  Our current book selection is The Parker Inheritance by Varian Johnson.

This mystery introduces us to Candice and her best buddy, Brandon.  Candice meets Brandon the summer she is forced to leave Atlanta to live with her mother in her deceased grandmothers home in the small town of Lambert, SC.  Candice has heard rumblings of her grandmother having been run out of town many years ago and seeks to find out the truth.

The truth seekers are lead into a history of ugly deeds, forgotten heroes, unspoken secrets and a burried fortune.

GoBYK book club is an opportunity to slowly dissect the story line, analyze character development, theme and conflict. The unique aspect of GoBYK book club is the Black history component.

The Parker Inheritance not only refers to a time that challenged civil rights, but also mentions specific individuals both fictional and non-fictional that lived in that time.  GoBYK will use this novel as the backdrop to a dynamic history lesson. Your child with be presented with Black history facts to not only get an understanding of the plot and purpose of the reference, but to also teach them about Black history in an unconventional way.
